Dividend Investing Destroyed By Taxes? (Unrealized Capital Gains)
Taxation of unrealized capital gains, increased taxes on qualified dividends, and higher corporate taxes are all being proposed by Vice President Harris. Today, I want to explore how my dividend stock investing strategy could completely change should these proposals come to fruition.

this is what I'm reading from other sources: "Tax long-term capital gains and qualified dividends at 28 percent (as opposed to 39.6 percent as in the Biden budget) for taxable income above $1 million and tax unrealized capital gains at death above a $5 million exemption ($10 million for joint filers)". does that mean unrealized gains is only for the deceased and doesn't apply to living? and the proposed long term capital gains tax only for income above 1 Million?

Thanks for checking in on ‘our’ property and posting too. When our son was born, I opened a custodial account at Computershare and started investing an “allowance” in it regularly on his behalf as soon as I had his brand new SSN. It’s 12 years and a month since then and we continue to reinvest the dividends. O was my best idea in 2012 and I have the utmost faith I’m doing the right things for him. He does get a ‘supplemental’ allowance now, so he can figure out the value of a dollar. He’s doing pretty well and asks questions - and I love it! Anyway, just wanted to spell this all out. I think I’ll copy this to a note, with this URL to see what inspired me to comment. Happy travels Ian.

The Income Factory, an invitation for portfolio implosion. I greatly enjoy Steven’s interviews. The name of the strategy is catchy, and a concept like this is what many of us conservative investors think would be the “Holy Grail” of long-term investing. We want to sleep well at night. We want a reasonable return with lower volatility so we can stay in investments for decades. If one thinks there will never be a major bear market then all will be fine, but we know better, at least we should. I hate to throw cold water on the concept, but I have taken a look at his closed-end fund list during the last major decline and it's not pretty. I hoped that the high income generated from these kinds of issues would greatly smooth out the total return of a basket of high income closed-end funds. Unfortunately, due to the unique structure of the closed end fund, the holders of most of these funds have been treated to drawdowns well in excess of the S&P during the 2007 - 2009 bear market period. So, if there is never a deep bear market, future downturns limited to say 10 - 20% corrections, then the strategy will work without too much pain going forward. In the “big bear” market scenario, if one sticks with it they must ignore a wipeout, secure in the hope that over some years in the future they will get financially whole, then do well. For an older retired person, this is less than an ideal way to spend their golden years. His issue list has done very well in recent years with the fantastic rally, the “everything bubble” with smooth price action as all asset classes have attracted money flows. We know this will not last forever. Steven’s analytical period solely includes this bubble period, making these look better than they historically are in more difficult market environments. You want high income, but with this you get high volatility due to their structure. Closed-end funds are more volatile than ETF’s and/or mutual funds of the same type. Bought at the correct time, that is, after a big decline, one can have great returns in the recovery in closed-end funds. Bought at very extended markets like we have now, much pain will be doled out in a future collapse. One would have to believe in the soft-landing scenario, not the crushing declines ahead like Hunt, Pomboy, Williams, Rubino, Hanke, Pento, Green, DeMartino Booth, Henrich, Oakley, Hussman, Shedlock, Rosenberg, and many others. If you are not familiar with these analysts, go to Thoughtful Money on RUclips and listen to these interviews. These folks are very smart with long successful careers in market analysis. I’ll go with them. Rough markets are ahead at some point, and in major bear markets closed end funds are crushed. Steven Bavaria was a credit risk analyst in his career and looks at the situation from a credit risk angle. Negative price volatility is not his thing. He glosses over that situation. I am a price action guy. One has to be able to stay with a strategy, and the only way to do so is to understand what kind of drawdown will be experienced in a protracted major bear market and decide if defensive measures should be taken before that occurs. It’s all very difficult. The answer is “there is no answer” which comfortably provides the investor with a strategy devoid of negative psychological stress. I have used software since 1995 called Investor’s Fasttrack. It can create custom daily rebalanced indexes of funds, stocks from custom lists and has momentum analysis features, relative strength, etc. It’s very helpful in looking at the total return of closed-end funds, as one can set it to look at total return with reinvested dividends and a line chart of the overall list as an index against something like SPY. It’s not a perfect representation of a buy and hold version of the individual issues, but some rebalancing protocol must be used, and daily is what they went with. All information is provided by the software and is assumed accurate. I do not guarantee accuracy but believe the information to be correct. When I worked with the list, I decided to post this to all RUclips interview sites interviewing Steve, given the gushingly positive posts on the subject in RUclips commentary. One could say that the adoption of such a strategy now is kind of a “Pied Piper” reality, lulling the late adopters into complacency. So, in looking at his list, any investor blindly going with this program in this greatly extended market, an "everything bubble", will have to know that in severe declines, losses in most of these issues are SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER THAN THE S&P. We know that a major crash is likely in the near future so is this a good time to invest for the long term with these, hoping that the income will smooth out risk? Well, no! With closed end income funds, one gets downside volatility in excess of the stock market, with underperformance to the upside at times. Interestingly the initial rebound off of a major bear market can be stunning, well in excess of the S&P, despite the asset class having various non-stock portfolio structures. Its money flows into and out of these which drives the volatility of CEF’s up and down, and after a great crash, short covering, then massive inflows make these soar upward. Without this understanding of price action, in a protracted bear market one will open their statements during a major decline like the 2007-2009 period and find a horror show of losses in their high-income closed end funds. Seeing this, many will blow out of those issues at some point when they hit their max pain level. The income generated from these CEF’s did nothing to help that total return during that event. The index performance below includes reinvested dividends. I loaded Bavaria's 31 issue list from his book into Investors Fasttrack software and here is the daily rebalanced custom index drawdown of the 18 issues which existed at that time. There were 7 waves down, with rallies after 6 attempts at a bottom. Any purchases during those rally attempts of CEF’s resulted in losses after each peak. I will only show the drawdowns in each wave down. The first 4 waves were not disastrous, though more than the S&P. Investor confidence was not broken. the 5th, 6th and 7th waves were another story. SPY versus Bavaria 18 CEF Index list Peak to trough declines. 1st wave down, 05/01/2007 - 08/15/2007 SPY -8.07% Bavaria 18 Index -18.31% 2nd wave down, 10/112007 - 11/20/2007 SPY - 6.96% Bavaria 18 Index -9.33% 3rd wave down, 01/30/2008 - 03/17 SPY -4.90% Bavaria 18 Index -11.98% 4th wave down, 05/20/2008 - 07/15/2008 SPY -14.30% Bavaria 18 Index -15.16% Market implosion period. 5th wave down, 08/22/2008 - 10/09/2008 SPY -29.65% Bavaria 18 Index -43.59% 6th wave down, 10/04/2008 - 11/21/2008 SPY -20.80% Bavaria 18 Index -33.91% 7th wave down, 02/06/2009 - 03/09/2009 SPY -21.69 Bavaria 18 Index -31.88% Let’s look at the issues in the Bavaria 18 list peak to momentum bottom. Returns include reinvested dividends. 06/01/2007 -11/21/2008 SPY -46.84% NCZ -78.62% JPC -73.92% CSQ -66.77% AVJ - 65.36% CIF -64.59% CHI -64.35% DSU -63.84% HYB - 62.72% JRO -61.39% CHY -59.20% EFR -58.70% HPS -57.98% FOF -57.51% HYT -56.64% DHF -55.20% CIK - 49.89% ERC -44.79% MCI -40.29% Note that only two of these issues lost less than SPY’s - 46.84%. The volatility of CEF’s is driven by the fixed number of shares, the propensity for these to be aggressively dumped by shocked retail investors at psychologically significant technical failures, as well as aggressive short sellers who specialize in short selling these issues during declines. These players knowing the downside momentum of these issues make that a very profitable idea when they get the timing right. Now let’s look at the rally. I will simply go with the indexes for this one. Rally to 1st price peak. 03/09/2009 - 05/03/2010 SPY +81.56% Bavaria 18 Index + 161.64% FANTASTIC! Final Points: THESE NEED TO BE BOUGHT AFTER A CRASH, NOT AT MARKET PEAKS LIKE NOW! AS ONE CAN SEE, DETERMINING THE ACTUAL BOTTOM IS VERY DIFFICULT. 6 BOTTOM FAILURES BEFORE THE REAL ONE. THESE ISSUES DO RECOVER STRONGLY IN THE SUBSEQUENT MARKET RECOVERY, HOWEVER, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT PSYCHOLOGICALLY TO BUY AFTER ONE SEES THE INTENSITY OF SUCH A MARKET DECLINE, ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE BEEN WHIPSAWED TRYING TO PICK THE BOTTOM ALONG THE WAY DOWN. AFTER THE REAL BOTTOM IS WHEN ONE SHOULD BE INTERESTED IN INVESTING IN THEM, NOT NOW! IN A MARKET COLLAPSE SCENARIO, THEY ARE A TRADE AT THE REAL BOTTOM WHICH THEN CAN TURN INTO A LONGER-TERM HOLD WITH A SIGNIFICANT CUSHION IF PURCHASED WELL. AS SHOWN, ONE MUST UNDERSTAND THAT MASSIVE DRAWDOWN WILL OCCUR IN A CRASH, SO IF YOU ARE HOLDING THESE ISSUES NOW THINKING YOU ARE “SAFE” WITH HIGH DIVIDEND INCOME, YOU ARE NOT AND WILL LIKELY SELL THESE IN SHOCK AFTER BONE CRUSHING LOSSES AT OR NEAR THE LOWS IN A MAJOR BEAR MARKET! Best of luck! JMS

Would companies change their strategy of paying dividend then if this comes to fruition?
